Planning meal preparation support at home

By All Ways of Caring

How families can organize grocery shopping, meal preferences, kitchen tasks, and caregiver visits around a loved one's existing routine.

Start with preferences and the current routine

Meal support is easier to plan when the person receiving care has a say in it. Discuss favourite meals, usual eating times, cultural preferences, and the kitchen tasks they enjoy. The goal is to agree on practical help that fits the household.

Make a list of tasks that have become difficult. Shopping, carrying groceries, opening packages, standing at a counter, preparing a meal, and cleaning up are different activities. A clear list helps the care team understand the request without assuming every task needs to be taken over.

Make the visit practical

Before a caregiver visit, agree on how groceries will be purchased and paid for, where supplies are kept, and what should be prepared during the available time. Discuss whether the person would like company while eating or help setting up meals between visits.

  • Shopping arrangements and household budget
  • Food preferences, allergies, and existing dietary instructions
  • Kitchen equipment and tasks the person wants to do themselves
  • Meal times, cleanup, and communication with family

Keep clinical dietary decisions with the care team

Share any dietary or swallowing instructions supplied by the person's clinician with the care team. A general meal-support arrangement should not create or change a medical diet. If needs are unclear, ask the treating clinician or dietitian for guidance before the routine is agreed.

During a Caring Consult, explain the support needed and preferred visit times. The local AWoC team can discuss the tasks, availability, and costs. Confirm the arrangement rather than assuming that a chef service, shared dining program, or specialized dietary service is included.
